NELLIE BLY

Written by Kiley Hatch

Length: 30-45 min

Genre: history, drama, comedy

Cast size: 19 (written for double casting) - 10 female. 9 male.

Audience: young families, children

Story: Elizabeth Cochran was an outspoken young journalist in 1864, commonly known by her pen name “Nellie Bly.” Hers is a story of perseverance, adventure, and courage. She won her first job in a newspaper by responding to an article discussing a woman's place as in the kitchen. Her vehement response and argument so impressed the editor that he hired her. She went on to be a pivotal character in women’s history as one of the first American female journalists. With her go getter attitude, she was a positive force in every situation she encountered. This play is the story of one of her more light hearted, fantastical feats: going around the world in less than 80 days.
